Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
